“The goal isn’t to cover your skin. It’s to let it look like skin—only a little more rested, even, and radiant.”
There is something about summer that makes a full face of makeup feel like too much.
The heat. The humidity. The sunscreen. The long days outside. And honestly? Sometimes I just want to see my skin.
That’s where skin tint comes in.
For women over 40, I think the beauty conversation is shifting in a really beautiful direction. We don’t necessarily want more coverage. We want better-looking skin.
We want to even things out without covering everything up. We want our freckles, our natural dimension, and yes—even a little texture—to still look like us.
That is the beauty of a great skin tint.
Welcome to the next chapter of Do It for the Glow.
What Exactly Is a Skin Tint?
Think of a skin tint as the relaxed cousin of foundation.
While traditional foundation is generally designed to provide more coverage and create a more uniform complexion, a skin tint is designed to even out the appearance of your skin while allowing more of your natural complexion to show through.
Coverage can range from sheer to light, depending on the formula and how you apply it.
And that’s exactly why I love it for summer.
It’s not trying to create a new face.
It’s simply giving your skin a little help.
Why I Love Skin Tints for Women Over 40
As we get older, our skin can become more textured, drier, or less predictable than it was in our twenties and thirties.
Sometimes, adding more makeup only emphasizes what we’re trying to disguise.
A lightweight complexion product can do the opposite.
Instead of piling on layers of primer, foundation, concealer, powder, and setting spray, a skin tint allows you to take a much lighter approach.
The result?
Skin that looks like skin.
Just a little more even.
A little more polished.
And a whole lot more comfortable.
Summer Is the Perfect Time to Go Sheer
Summer beauty should breathe.
When temperatures climb and humidity is high, heavy foundation can start to feel like a mask. It can separate, settle, or become noticeably heavier throughout the day.
A skin tint gives you the option to simplify.
Try pairing it with:
- Your favorite lightweight moisturizer
- Daily SPF
- A sheer skin tint
- Cream or liquid blush
- A little mascara
- A nourishing lip color
That’s it.
You don’t have to cover every little thing.
Let your skin participate in the look.
Skin Tint vs. Foundation: Which One Do You Need?
I don’t think one is necessarily better than the other.
They simply serve different purposes.
Reach for a skin tint when you want:
- Sheer or light coverage
- A more natural finish
- A quick everyday routine
- Lightweight summer makeup
- Your natural skin to remain visible
Reach for foundation when you want:
- More coverage
- Greater evening of the complexion
- A more polished makeup look
- Longer-lasting coverage for an event or special occasion
And there’s nothing wrong with wanting more coverage sometimes.
The point isn’t to abandon foundation.
It’s to stop believing we need it every day.
The Trick Is in the Application
One of my favorite things about skin tint is how little you actually need.
Start with a small amount and apply it where you want a little more evening—usually through the center of the face.
Then blend outward.
You can use your fingers, a makeup sponge, or a brush depending on the formula and the finish you prefer.
And here’s my favorite part:
Don’t automatically cover everything.
If you have a little sun-kissed color, freckles, or natural variation in your complexion, let some of it show.
That’s what makes the finished look believable.
Don’t Forget Your Blush
This is where our previous Do It for the Glow post comes back into play.
A sheer complexion and a beautiful cream or liquid blush are a perfect summer combination.
Once you’ve evened out your skin without completely covering it, blush has an opportunity to bring warmth and dimension back to the face.
A little color high on the cheekbones, blended upward, can make the entire complexion look more alive.
You don’t need much.
Healthy-looking skin + a little blush = magic.
Your Skin Doesn’t Need to Look Perfect
This may be my favorite part of the whole conversation.
There is a difference between wanting to improve your skin and believing your skin needs to be hidden.
Those are not the same thing.
Fine lines are part of your face.
Texture is part of your face.
Freckles, sun spots, pores, and little imperfections are part of being human.
Of course, take care of your skin. Protect it. Hydrate it. Treat it. Invest in it.
But you don’t have to erase every sign that you’ve lived in it.
There is beauty in skin that looks like a real person’s skin.
My Summer Glow Formula
When I want that effortless summer complexion, I’m thinking less about makeup and more about the overall finish.
Hydrate. Protect. Even. Flush. Glow.
Start with well-cared-for skin. Add your SPF. Use a skin tint only where you want a little evening. Bring warmth back with blush. Finish with a comfortable lip.
Then stop.
Let the skin breathe.
That’s the beauty of summer in August!
The Glow Philosophy
I’ve spent years working with women and looking closely at skin in the treatment room, and one thing I’ve learned is that beautiful skin doesn’t have to mean perfect skin.
Some of the most radiant faces I’ve worked with weren’t the ones with the least texture or the fewest lines.
They were the faces of women who looked comfortable in themselves.
That’s the glow I’m interested in.
Not covering yourself up.
Not chasing every new beauty trend.
Not trying to look twenty-five.
Just looking like the best, most cared-for version of yourself.
And sometimes, that means letting a little more of your skin show.
Do it for the glow.
Not for perfection. Not for anyone else’s approval.
Do it because caring for yourself is one of the most beautiful investments you’ll ever make.
Until next time,
